The UFO?

When people first start learning about LED grow lights they learn that there are tons of acronyms and jargon. One acronym that makes many beginners do a double take is the UFO LED grow light. I know when I first saw this acronym I did a double take. Are they really talking about unidentified flying objects? The truth is that they are, well kind of.

UFO LED Grow Light

Welcome to earth.

This UFO grow light actually looks like an alien spaceship from some superior intelligence. They are circular lights that have the LED lights in the middle. To be honest, I’m not sure why they went with this design, but it is a fun design to say the least. The funny thing is that it has become one of the most popular grow lights out there.

There is some debate (as always with LED grow lights) as to the effectiveness of these UFO lights. Recently the HTGSupply company came up with a new UFO light called the Gen 3 LED light. They claim that this light will grow much better than the generic UFO lights out there. Their reasoning is that the other current options don’t produce blue and red light spectrums at the correct points in nanometers (NMs). To be honest this sounds like it could just be marketing rhetoric. Their sales page comes off as a little bit phony. I’ve tried looking for published examples where the Gen 3 outperformed other UFOs but I was unable to find any. That being said, I did find some examples where people successfully grew plants with the Generation 3 from HTGSupply.

Pricing

The price range for these UFO lights is usually around $200. Though I have seen some going for around $500. The interesting thing is that the Gen 3 light is actually priced at $150. This was confusing because HTGSupply was going on and on about how the competitors were using crappy lights from a Chinese factory and that they were the only ones using quality, expensive lights. My question is how is it possible that there UFO light is less expensive if they are using the highest quality LED lights? Anyways, you might be able to find a cheaper light on EBay, but you always run the risk of lower quality. These 90 Watt UFO lights are interesting to say the least.
