Sunshine Systems is a pretty big name in the LED grow lighting world. It hasn’t been until the last four to five years that more and more growers are moving towards LED technology. Given that trend, it says something that Sunshine Systems has been selling LED lights since 2007. They have a wide variety of lights, but today we’ll take an in-depth look at their 90 Watt UFO LED Grow Light.

The best part about this light is that it’s lean, mean, and green. In other words it packs quite a punch for a 90 Watt light. There is a reason that many people are excited about LED technology. These little lights save energy, reduce heat, and most importantly they produce growing results. If you are a person who doesn’t like a lot of clutter and you want to reduce your environmental footprint then GrowUFO (the branded name for Sunshine’s UFO light) is a good option. This light requires no ballast like tradition HID lights do. It is a bit costly up front but over the life of the light you will save money.
Advantages of SunShine Systems 90W UFO Grow Light
One of the biggest advantages of GrowUFO is that it hardly emits any heat. This means you don’t have to worry as much about your plant getting burn marks. Many skeptical customers have been pretty surprised when they realized how little heat this guy puts out.
Energy savings is another big advantage when you use this LED UFO light. According to the manufacturers you can save up to 80 percent in energy costs. This is probably a little bit of an exaggeration for most people, but the bottom line is that you will save energy with this light. You can pretty much grow any indoor plant with this light. Some common usages include flowers, tomatoes, peppers (our personal favorite), strawberries, and other fruits and vegetables. Using this light is pretty easy. If you buy the light on Amazon it comes with everything you’ll need to get started, including the hanging kit. Simply place the UFO light around a foot to two feet away from your plants. If you are in the vegetation stage, you keep the light on for around 15 hours. In the flowering stage keep it on for around 11 hours. Simple, clean, and clutter free.
Disadvantages of Sunshine’s GrowUFO LED Grow Light
On Sunshine’s website they claim that this 90 watt light can replace a traditional 400 watt high-intensity discharge (HID) light. While it’s true that the LED lights do pack more punch than traditional lights, it’s hard to say the exact amount. This light is probably closer to a 300 watt HID light than a 400 watt.
Another small concern with GrowUFO is that it doesn’t cover the full 12 square feet area as suggested by the official makers. For best results you are probably looking at four to six square feet instead of 12. That being said, covering four to six square feet with one 90 watt light is pretty amazing. Just keep that in mind before making your final purchasing decision.

This light is priced pretty reasonably for a solid LED grow light. It usually costs around $300. The cheapest place to buy this light is either Amazon or the official website of SunShine Systems (sunshine-systems.com). We personally recommend ordering from Amazon because of the free shipping on items over $25. Also, if you buy from Amazon, then if anything goes wrong Amazon acts as an intermediary between you and the buyer. That being said, you can’t go wrong purchasing this light from either place.

I have owned this light for ~ 3 years. My 2 earlier versions blew power supplies and only half the lite worked. The company was very good about replacement.
